1920 was such a period when girls were denied even basic education. The downtrodden didn't have the basic human rights. At the juncture of this dark age Carmelite sisters opened the widehorizon of knowledge and a heart that is sacred through which divine love flows profuselyinto each and everyone irrespective of their caste and creed. With this intention they started a school at Thrissur, Sacred Heart Convent Girls School. This revolution was indeed a novel one as it lit the flame of learning through our school at Thrissur. Our abode of learning harvested a centurion golden reap of knowledge and culture. Throughout the years, the class rooms of this school witnessed floral showers of ranks. No one was ready to know and care the leper’s at T B sanatorium in Thrissur. Effective treatment and medicines for leprosy was limited. The king of Cochin sought the help of Carmelite sisters to nurse the leper's who were in a miserable state. The congregation of C M C sisters, who were always ready to serve started a convent with this intention in 1907 at Thrissur named Sacred Heart Convent. After ten to twelve years, they decided to start a school to educate girl children. They were inspired by the words ofSt Chavara Elias Kuriakose, who lit the novel flame of education in Kerala. He upholded the dictum that there is aneed to open schools in order to spread the knowledge to all. Thus in 1920, Sacred Heart Girls Convent School started near to the convent .At the start, there were only two kindergarten classes and first and second standard classes. Many children from
various families came to learn irrespective of their caste and creed. The very next year, the school was upgraded to upper primary school. There after every consecutive years witnessed a steady rise in the number of parents and students who came in to get an admission in school. In 1926, there emerged the high school section. In 1927 the first batch of Sacred Heart daughters after successfully completing their matriculate examination set for their journey scoring high in to the society spreading the motto of their school – Love, Truth and Liberation .As more girls enrolled to educate themselves, safe classrooms were constructed. In 1931, a three storied building was constructed for the school. Acknowledging the need for girls to pursue their higher educations, St Marys was developed as a college in 1946.
